Special Gallery Event Live Sand Painting December 7th 2019 12-6pm

Hudson Underground is honored to present a solo exhibition of new works by NewYork artist and sand painter, Joe Mangrum. The exhibit includes exciting original permanent sand paintings, utilizing Mangrum’s signature technique of binding colored sand on canvas and carved-relief wood panels, as well as a selection of acrylic and oil paintings based on photographic documentation of sand paintings, forming a feedback loop of visual imagery. Mangrum’s work combines a rich library of cultural patterns combined with nature, science and technology in spontaneous abstract compositions. Joe will create a live sand painting in the gallery on December 7th completing the loop between ephemeral sand painting, documented, constructed, bound and reimagined images of sand paintings. Joe Mangrum’s ephemeral sand paintings are known around the world. Having completed over 1200 dynamic sand paintings in public spaces, audiences have been engaged in New York and around the globe. A graduate of The School of the Art Institute Chicago, Mangrum’s work has been featured in The Museum of Art and Design, New York, MOCA, North Miami, de Young Museum in San Francisco, Doe Museum in The Netherlands and Sunshine Museum in Beijing, Asia Society, New York, and created an ephemeral sand painting for Flag Art Foundation’s “Watch Your Step” He is also a recipient of the Lorenzo Di Medici award in new media at the Florence Biennale.

“Joe Mangrum has a rare and remarkable talent – he can arrange anything anywhere – indoors, outdoors, animate, inanimate, large, small, rock, scissors, paper, plastic, plaster, powder, dirt, dust, doorknobs, pennies, bones, bottles, batteries, liquids, solids – anything – makes no difference. If all of us could do what Joe Mangrum does, the world would be an unimaginably fantastic and glorious place.”
